Basic Building Blocks of a Skincare Routine

Skincare routines are a lot like diets – everyone has their own way of doing things, and there are tons of different opinions on what works best. The more elaborate the routine, the more goals you have.

While it may be tempting to follow an influencer’s ten-step skin routine, the reality is every routine has to be customized to fit you.

New to the skincare game? No worries. The general consensus of an effective skincare routine is that it must include three things: cleansing, moisturizing, and adding a layer of protection.

Let’s break it down for you.

Starting a Skincare Routine: The Basics

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing is one of the most important steps of a skincare routine. Removing impurities from your face prevents buildup and future breakouts.

When you're choosing a cleanser, look for something that is gentle and won't leave your skin feeling tight or tingly. It needs to be so gentle that you can use it every day without drying out your face. We recommend the KLAVUU Pure Pearlsation Revitalizing Facial Cleansing Foam

Pat dry your face with a clean face towel. It’s important to take note to not rub your face dry or use the same towel you use for your body.

Additional Step: Exfoliate

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps your other skincare products absorb better. It's important to exfoliate regularly, but not frequently–which is why it isn’t a part of the basics.

Set a day or two spaced out in the week for exfoliation to avoid damaging your skin.

Step 2: Tone

Once you’ve cleansed your face, you need to prepare it for moisturizing – the next step then includes toner.

This product cleanses and soothes the skin as you prepare it for all of your other products. Because toner is a liquid, you should use a cotton ball or pad to apply this product rather than spraying it directly onto your face like you would with a spray-on moisturizer or sunscreen.

Additional Step: Serums

Serums are concentrated skincare products that can be applied directly to your skin or mixed with moisturizer. They’re typically used as a treatment for specific issues, like dryness, redness, and wrinkles. They also help other products absorb better into the skin.

While this isn’t necessarily a must, this step is important if you want a truly holistic skincare routine.

If you have specific goals in mind such as anti-aging or ance management, it is best that you invest in a good serum. For aging concerns, we would go for wrinkle-preventing serums such as Caviar Protein Fluid by OxygenCeuticals. If blemishes are the main concern, the Herbal Fluid by OxygenCeuticals is the one to get.

Step 3: Moisturize

Now that your skin has been cleansed and prepped, it’s time to add some moisture back into the mix. To do this, you should use a moisturizer. A good moisturizer helps keep your skin hydrated and smooth, so it looks brighter and more youthful.

There are tons of different kinds of moisturizers out there; lotion, cream, and gel are just three examples. Though they all have one thing in common: they help keep moisture locked in your skin using ingredients like glycerin or lactic acid (which is found naturally in milk).

And finally, apply sunscreen during the day.

The best way to take care of your skin is to protect it from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Use sunscreen with SPF 50 such as the TP Sun Cream SPF 50 by OxygenCeuticals on your face before heading out.
