How to Sage Your Home: Clear Negative Energy and Invite Peace

By Kelly Lavelle • Aloe Beauty Spa – Scottsdale, Arizona

Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt heavy or anxious — even though nothing obvious was wrong? That’s often a sign of stagnant or negative energy. Just like we cleanse our skin and body, our spaces need energetic cleansing too. One of the most ancient and effective ways to do this is through saging — also known as smudging.

What Is Saging?

Saging is a sacred ritual that originated in Indigenous cultures, using dried white sage (or other herbs) to purify a person, place, or object. As the smoke rises, it’s believed to carry away dense or negative energy, leaving behind clarity and balance.

At Aloe Beauty Spa, we often recommend clients sage their homes after emotional stress, arguments, moving into a new space, or starting a new chapter in life — like after a big healing facial or Reiki session.

When Should You Sage Your Home?

  • After an argument or breakup

  • When moving into a new space

  • After illness or emotional exhaustion

  • Before meditation or energy healing

  • Whenever your home feels “off” or heavy

What You’ll Need

  • One white sage bundle or palo santo stick

  • A heat-proof dish or abalone shell to catch ashes

  • Matches or a lighter

  • An open window or door to release the energy

Step-by-Step Guide to Saging Your Home

  1. Open a few windows and doors to allow energy to flow out.

  2. Set your intention — for example, “I release all negativity and invite peace and love into my home.”

  3. Light the sage until it catches fire, then gently blow out the flame to produce smoke.

  4. Walk slowly through each room, letting the smoke drift into corners, closets, and around mirrors or doorways.

  5. Visualize the smoke cleansing the space as you move clockwise through your home.

  6. When finished, extinguish the sage safely by pressing it into your dish or sand.

A Simple Cleansing Script

“I cleanse this space of all that no longer serves me. Only positive, loving energy may remain.”

Safety Tips

  • Never leave burning sage unattended.

  • Keep away from curtains, paper, or pets.

  • Allow the sage bundle to cool completely before storing.

Enhance the Energy After Saging

  • Shop crystals and spiritual tools from Aloe Beauty Spa

  • Place rose quartz for love, amethyst for peace, or citrine for abundance

  • Diffuse lavender or frankincense essential oil for harmony

Final Thoughts

Energy clearing is just as important as physical cleaning — both create space for peace, clarity, and joy. Start small, trust your intuition, and watch your space (and spirit) transform.
