Microneedling and Rosacea: Is it Effective?

Microneedling is known to be a go-to treatment for plenty of skin concerns. From acne scarring to anti-aging, microneedling provides benefits for the skin of all types.

One skin issue that is less known to benefit from microneedling is Rosacea, a condition that is often overlooked by those who have it. Here is everything you need to know about Rosacea and how microneedling can help.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a non-contagious skin inflammation that exclusively affects the face. While it is most common in caucasian middle-aged women, it can affect anyone of any gender, ethnicity, and skin type.

Plenty of people may not know that they have rosacea because it can often be mistaken for eczema, acne, or skin allergies. The cause of this condition is still unknown, but it is theorized that it may be due to an overactive immune system. It can also be linked to genetics, the environment people are exposed to, or a combination of these.

Types of Rosacea

Papulopustular Rosacea

This type of Rosacea is often mistaken for an acne breakout. It produces pus-filled spots and red bumps and can leave a burning and stinging sensation.

Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea

Skin flushing and spider veins are the most common characteristics of this type of Rosacea. Flushing is often accompanied by momentary warm sensations.

Phymatous Rosacea

This Rosacea creates a thickening layer in the chin, forehead, and nose.

Do I Have Rosacea?

If any of these types ring a bell, you can always bring it up with your dermatologist to confirm. You can also contest any diagnoses that may point to other concerns. For example, if you exhibit acne-like bumps but the medication is not working, it may be Papulopustular Rosacea.

Can Microneedling Help with Rosacea?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive facial treatment that uses needles to create tiny punctures in the skin to help with collagen production.

This procedure can help reduce the likelihood of recurrence by normalizing the creation of blood vessels and releasing regulatory growth factors. It also helps with circulation and reduces inflammation. Microneedling is also exfoliating in nature, so it can get rid of any lingering bacteria and buildup on your face.

While microneedling can help with Rosacea, it is not a “cure.” Rosacea has no known cure and is only manageable with the right prescriptions from a dermatologist. Proper skin care is also needed to prevent breakouts.
